Do Your Part!
Have you ever wanted to have your very own sea
turtle? Now you can do your part for conservation by adopting
one Georgia's 8 sea turtles involved in a telementry monitoring
project. These turtles have been fitted with satellite
telemetry units that allow their movements to be monitored by
satellite and then tracked on the www.seaturtle.org website. The
names of these turtles were chosen by school age children from
across the state in honor of the countries involved in the recent
G8 Summit. Adoption levels are available at $25, $50 and $75
levels and all proceeds benefit the Sea Turtle.org website and sea
turtle conservation projects conducted by the Nongame Wildlife&
Natural Heritage Section
Where in the world is Oki?
And Ormanda? And Tea Cake? And Cherepakha? And Bonjour? And
Bellisma? And Aurora? And Cherokee Rose? Now you can find
them by logging onto www.seaturtle.org and
clicking on the Sea Turtle Satllite Telemetry Project and then the
GA DNR Project.
Adult female loggerhead sea turtles were captured
after they nested on Cumberland and Jekyll Islands and fitted with
transmitters. Following their release, a satellite will
monitor the turtles movements during daily passes over coastal
Georgia. Turtle locations will be plotted on nautical charts
and will be available for viewing at www.seaturtle.org under the
Georgia Tracking Project. The sea turtle's transmitters will send
multiple signals daily while the turtles are actively nesting and
less frequently (bi-weekly) following the active nesting
period.
