Georgia Natural Heritage Program - The Program

The Georgia Natural Heritage Program (GNHP) was established in 1986 through a cooperative agreement between the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and The Nature Conservancy. The Nature Conservancy, a private non-profit conservation organization, has helped establish The Natural Heritage Network. This network, represented by NatureServe includes similar programs in all 50 states and many countries.

In recent years, functions of GNHP have expanded and merged with the Wildlife Resources Division's Nongame Wildlife Program. Both programs were part of the Nongame Wildlife & Natural Heritage Section. As of November 2006, the section's name changed and the two programs are now offices of the Nongame Conservation Section. The former GNHP office can now be referred to as the Nongame Conservation Section, Social Circle Office.
