Stephens County Resident Ties State Record Striped Bass
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (June 26, 2009) - Angler Terry McConnell of Toccoa, Georgia had more than just a great day of fishing on Lake Richard B. Russell on April 3, 2009 - he managed to catch a fish that tied a Georgia state record! McConnell reeled in a 63 lbs., 49 ½ -inch striped bass using a blueback herring on a baitcast rod, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division.

(June 26, 2009) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division is teaming with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and other partner agencies for “Operation Dry Water” the weekend of June 26-28. Operation Dry Water, a coordinated national weekend of BUI detection and enforcement, is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol related accidents and fatalities and fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use on the water.

Know Mimimum Age Requirements Before Operating a Vessel

(May 15, 2009) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources reminds boaters under the age of 16 that there is a minimum age requirement to operate a boat or personal watercraft (PWC) on public lakes and waterways. Young boaters can satisfy the minimum age requirements of this law by taking a boating safety course or by operating a boat under the supervision or in the accompaniment of an adult. The DNR encourages adults to NEVER leave young children unattended on vessels.

DNR Announces Changes to State WMA Program
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (May 8, 2009) - The Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division today announced that beginning July 1, there will be three less wildlife management areas (WMA) in the state's program and one WMA will be reduced in size. These changes were necessary due to decreased appropriations in the FY2010 state budget. Also, the Board of Natural Resources recently approved an addition of more than 1,700 acres to the state-owned Silver Lake Wildlife Management Area in Seminole County and another 7,000 acres in Long and McIntosh counties, known as Townsend WMA.

Washington County Landowner Receives Civil Penalties and for Multiple Violations
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (April 21, 2009) - The Commissioner of Natural Resources today issued Administrative Orders to Washington County landowner Mr. Jens Brynteson and Mr. David Kilgore of Madison County. The orders impose civil penalties of more than $70,000.00 on Mr. Brynteson and penalties of $2,000.00 on Mr. Kilgore for numerous violations of Georgia's Game and Fish laws discovered during an 18-month investigation and subsequent search warrant findings. Additionally, the Commissioner issued Administrative Orders authorizing seizure of fallow deer herds, red deer herds and Mouflon sheep on two properties owned by Mr. Brynteson. Mr. Brynteson and Mr. Kilgore will have 30 days to file an appeal of the Administrative Order. If no appeal is filed within 30 days, the orders will be final. Further, Department officials today issued 29 misdemeanor citations to Mr. Kilgore for violating Georgia's trapping laws.

Wildlife Camps Available for Youth This Summer
COVINGTON, Ga. (Mar. 27, 2009) - The Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center (located between Covington and Jackson on Ga. Hwy. 36) will host its 7th annual FFA Wildlife Camp this summer. The goal of the wildlife camp is to teach young boys and girls about outdoor sports and safety and to increase their awareness and appreciation of wildlife. This year there will be four "Wildlife Camps" to provide wildlife education and outdoor safety training in a dynamic environment for young boys and girls. There are two wildlife camps for youth ages 10-15, to be held June 21-26 and June 28-July 3, 2009. In addition, there is an Advanced Wildlife Camp available for youth ages 11-16 from July 5-10 and July 12-17, 2009. Registration is open, but space is limited!

Public Hearings Scheduled for April on Hunting Regulations
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (Mar. 27, 2009) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division will hold three public hearings to receive input on proposed changes to the hunting regulations for the 2008-2009 and the 2010-2011 hunting seasons. The purpose of any proposed regulation change is to manage Georgia's game birds and game animals according to sound principles of wildlife management and to meet public objectives for use of these renewable natural resources. The migration continues through early April, making March the ideal time to target the popular sport fish. Prescribed Fire Will Mean New Life for Rare Mountain Bog

(Mar. 16, 2009) - Trekking uphill and through charred underbrush, most of it still smoking, four Nomex-clad workers push their way into one of North Georgia's last remaining mountain bogs. Seasonal Trout Streams Open Mar. 28
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Mar. 12, 2009) - Recent rain and snow storms have improved stream flows in north Georgia just in time for pre-season trout stocking. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan to stock more than one million trout in Georgia streams, rivers and small lakes by the end of the year. Many streams will be stocked by the end of the month and in time for opening day for seasonal trout stream fishing – Sat., Mar. 28.
