Cataloging Information

The NCS, Nongame Conservation Section, data system consists of a group of related, centralized databases. In order to maximize the accuracy, accessibility, and usefulness of the biological inventory information, it is maintained in several different forms.

  1. Manual Files - Reprints, field survey reports, location records, and other pertinent documents are kept for each element.
  2. Computer Files - Information from the manual and map files is coded and entered into a computerized database for rapid cross-referencing and retrieval of records. Much of this information has been incorporated into a geographic information system (GIS).

NCS has catalogued information on over 10,000 element occurrences of rare species or natural communities in the state. Over 150 federal, state, or private properties that provide some level of protection to these resources have been mapped and catalogued. The NCS staff has developed a GIS database of all state-owned lands managed by the DNR. Field surveys for species of concern and natural communities on Department properties are part of an ongoing effort to enhance the database.
