A winter draw down is underway at Fox Lake on the Marben Public Fishing Area, located in Mansfield, Ga., according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. This draw down reduces the water in the lake in an effort to accomplish several goals. The draw down began on Tues. Dec. 7, 2010 and will remain down until Feb. 15, 2011.
“Reducing the water here in the lake will concentrate forage species such as shad and bream, increasing the condition of the predator species like bass and crappie,” says Division fisheries biologist Joe Rydell. “This effort also will aid in controlling nuisance aquatic species, such as lyngbya.”
Lyngbya is a form of algae that builds up in large mats, creating problems for anglers and boaters. Although certain types of algae can be favorable for ponds, lyngbya is not a desirable species and it is seldom consumed by fish. Lyngbya is commonly transferred from pond to pond in bait buckets, livewells and on boat trailers. Cleaning boats, fishing gear and trailers before between fishing trips helps stop the spread of aquatic hitchhikers like lyngbya.
Anglers should note that the boat ramp for Fox Lake will be unavailable during the draw down period, but the lake is accessible for bank fishing.
Marben PFA takes its name from the combination of Margery and Bennett O'Boyle, previous owners of part of this area. Division fisheries personnel intensively manage the 22 lakes and ponds, which range in size from 1 - 95 acres and total approximately 295 acres, for bass, bream, catfish, crappie and yellow perch. Most lakes are accessible to both boat and bank anglers with concrete boat ramps and access trails.
Facilities available include kids only ponds, concrete boat ramps (6 lakes), boat docks, restrooms, fishing piers, picnic areas, primitive camping, some fishing areas accessible to persons with disabilities. Anglers utilizing the area will be required to meet all license requirements for the PFA and all current regulations apply.
