Give to Georgia Wildlife This Tax Season? Check!

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (4/11/2011)

Don’t forget your wild neighbors this tax season!

The Georgia Wildlife Conservation Fund checkoff on state income tax forms is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help conserve rare and endangered animals and plants.

Contributions have supported wildlife comebacks such as the recovery of bald eagles and the protection of prime natural habitat, including at Zahnd Natural Area in northwest Georgia and Townsend Wildlife Management Area along the Altamaha River in southeast Georgia.

Checkoff donations are also used to attract and match federal and private grants. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Nongame Conservation Section gains about $1 in grants for every 25 cents spent from the Georgia Wildlife Conservation Fund.

The fund was created by state law for nongame wildlife conservation and wildlife habitat acquisition. The Nongame Conservation Section, which is charged with conserving nongame animals, native plants and natural habitats, receives no state appropriations but depends on grants, private donations and fundraisers such as the checkoff.

The Give Wildlife a Chance tax checkoff accounts for about a 10th of the agency’s funding.

More than 1,000 plant and animal species in Georgia are species of conservation concern. You can help them this tax season by filling in any amount more than $1 on line 26 of the state’s long tax form (Form 500) or line 10 of the short form (Form 500EZ).

All contributions, small or large, are used to support conservation of Georgia’s native wildlife.
