Family Day at the Range

Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center and the Hunter Development Program offer a variety of firearm training courses to provide participants the opportunity to learn firearm safety and proper shooting technique. Introduction and Beyond the Basics training days are provided, so a novice or beginner can learn the fundamentals of the various shooting disciplines.

To register, call 770-784-3059. Registration for these courses closes the Monday (6 days) before the training course. A liability/waiver form, as well as photo release form must be completed before attending one of these courses. Fill out a liability/waiver form and photo release form and email to Jody Rice at jody.rice@dnr.state.ga.us.

Introduction Training Courses:

The Family Day at the Range series offers introduction training courses for individuals that wish to learn basic firearm safety and have the opportunity to shoot a variety of firearms.

Introduction to Handgun and Rifle

Learn and practice safe shooting techniques for handgun and rifle. These classes focus on firearm safety and give participants an opportunity to shoot a variety of handguns and rifles. All classes begin in the Visitor Center with a safety orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m.

Introduction to Shotgun

Learn and practice safe shooting techniques for shotgun. This course is for individuals age 10 an Participants will be able to shoot .410, 28 ga, 20 ga and 12 ga. Participants will learn firearm safety, proper shooting technique and have the opportunity to shoot clay targets. All classes begin in the Visitor Center for a safety orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 1 p.m. and will end at 4 p.m.

Beyond the Basics:

The Family Day at the Range series offers “Beyond the Basics” training courses for individuals age 13 and older who wish to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities with firearms. In order to register for these trainings participants are required to have a thorough knowledge of firearm safety and experience with shooting firearms.

Advanced Handgun

This training focuses on firearm safety, shooting technique, sight picture and sight alignment and how to resolve certain firearm malfunctions. Participants will also have the opportunity to handle and shoot various handguns including revolvers, break actions and semiautomatics. All classes begin in the Visitor Center for a safety orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m.

Advanced Rifle

This training focuses on firearm safety, shooting technique, sight picture and sight alignment and how to resolve certain firearm malfunctions. Participants will also have the opportunity to handle and shoot various rifles including lever action, bolt action, break action and semiautomatics. All trainings begin in the Visitor Center for safety orientation before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 10 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m.

Advanced Shotgun

This training focuses on firearm safety, shooting techniques, sight picture and sight alignment and how to resolve certain firearm malfunctions. Participants will learn the various shotgun sports and will have the opportunity to shoot clay targets. All trainings begin in the Visitor Center for a safety orientation and before participants go to the range. Training course begins at 1 p.m. and will end at 4 p.m.

Due to training courses occurring at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center, the 50-yard shooting range will be closed on the following dates:

  • Mar. 29, 2014
  • Sept. 20, 2014
  • Nov. 22, 2014
The 100-yard range will be open for shooting. If you have any questions please contact Jody Rice at 770-784-3059. 

Prerequisite for Beyond the Basics Family Day at the Range Training Courses:

  1. Individuals have a thorough knowledge of firearm safety.
  2. Individuals have experience shooting that particular firearm (handgun, rifle or shotgun) for that session.
  3. Beyond the Basics training courses are for the ages of thirteen and up.

Examples that qualify an individual to meet the prerequisites to participate in a Beyond the Basics are listed below:

  • Has participated in any GA DNR firearm class such as Hunt n Learns, GA Becoming an Outdoors-Woman, Introduction to Family Day at the Range, SCTP, YHEC, Hunter Education Classes, summer camps and other shooting sports events/classes.
  • Has participated in an event/workshop outside from GA DNR, such as NRA classes, Firearm safety/shooting classes, Scouting merit badges/activity badges, 4-H shooting sports, FFA events, shooting sports summer camps and other shooting sports events or classes.

Policies

  • A nonrefundable $3.00 registration fee per session is required for each participant.
  • Participants must follow DNR Policies as well as the direction and instructions from the firearm instructors.
  • The Hunter Development Program provides all firearms, ammunition and targets. No personal firearms or ammunition is allowed.
  • Please arrive at the Visitor Center for check-in and safety orientation.
  • To allow as many individuals in the community to participant in Family Day at the Range sessions, we permit students to attend all sessions but students can only take the same session once during a calendar year.
