Acorn Production for 2004
Overall, acorn production is fair this year. Red
oaks have limited production and chestnut oaks are fair with
poor production in the ridge and valley region. White oak
production was exceptional this year. Acorn production can be
quite variable from year to year with crops ranging from
several hundred pounds per acre in excellent years to almost
no production in poor years. Other hard and soft mast
crops such as: hickories, blackgums, crabapples, persimmons
and grapes provide alternative food sources highly utilized by
wildlife in north Georgia during fall and winter when mast
crops are poor or fail altogether.
