McDuffie Environmental Education Center

The goal of the McDuffie Environmental Education Center (MEEC) is to provide students with stimulating outdoor experiences about the ecology of our wildlife, water, soils and forests while emphasizing good stewardship of these important resources.  This 570-acre site offers three interpretive nature trails, five outdoor classrooms, hands-on nature exhibits, two indoor science classrooms, two covered picnic pavilions, an outdoor amphitheater and a butterfly garden, as well as fields, forests, wetlands, ponds, and streams. MEEC is open by appointment only.

Field Trip Opportunities

MEEC offers a wide variety of grade-specific activities with unique curriculum that is aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards for pre-K through 7th grade.  Three Georgia certified teachers are on hand to provide instruction.  An overview of the MEEC curriculum is available on the MEEC website:  www.themeec.org.

Additionally, a tour of the McDuffie Fish Hatchery is available to all grade levels upon request, depending on fish production.  A Kids' Fishing Event can also be provided as part of the MEEC experience.

Reservations for the following school year open during mid-March.

Teacher Workshops

Every June, MEEC partners with the Watson-Brown Foundation to offer an educator's workshop called "Get Natural - Parts 1 and 2."  This interactive workshop supplies educators with knowledge and activities to enhance environmental education and social studies in the classroom.  Teachers can earn four professional development units toward recertification by completing the two courses.
