The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today dedicated the Georgia Veterans State Park Boat Ramp in Cordele, giving boaters and anglers improved access to Lake Blackshear and providing opportunity to host large-scale fishing tournaments, a known economic boost for local communities.
Sen. John Crosby, Sen. George Hooks and DNR Commissioner Mark Williams were in attendance at the ceremony.
This facility includes two, dual boat ramps with three courtesy docks and a gazebo. The parking lot now has the capacity to host up to 200 trucks and trailers. Restrooms, picnic tables and a campground also are nearby. The area is open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The new ramp is one of 17 being constructed around the state as part of the Go Fish Georgia Initiative. This initiative seeks to establish Georgia as a national fishing destination through a three-tiered approach: 1) improving the quality of fishing; 2) improving access to water bodies for fishing; and 3) increasing participation through active promotion and marketing of Georgia’s exceptional fishing resources.
Crisp County provided an in-kind match to Go Fish Georgia Initiative monies to build the ramp. Additionally, Crisp County built the earthen ramp (on which the paved ramp sits) and also constructed the improved parking area.
Various agencies and individuals participated in the development of this area, including Crisp County personnel, Georgia DNR staff members; Crisp County Public Works Department, DNR Parks & Engineering, Eugene Crapse (retired Crisp County administrator), and Steve Rentfrow and Marcus Waters of Crisp County Power.
Georgia Veterans State Park is located nine miles west of I-75 at exit #101. It features a military museum and aircraft exhibits, a golf course, Lake Blackshear Resort and Marina, hiking trails, geocaching and numerous other outdoor activities. To learn more, visit GeorgiaStateParks.org.
